The instrument cluster is a very common issue for the Audi A3, on models between 1998 & 2003. The common signs of a failed instrument cluster include: incorrect reading of the fuel and/or temperature gauge, entire cluster flashing or pulsing when turned on and complete failure of back-lighting. This speedo can also cause the battery to drain with ignition off.
